Homeschool
Greater Grace Christian Homeschool (GGCH) is a home school umbrella program sponsored by the Greater Grace Church of Baltimore under the supervision of Greater Grace Christian Academy. The mission is to provide oversight for local GGWO homeschooling families as required under Maryland State regulations. GGCH is registered with the Maryland State Department of Education to supervise home instruction.
Eligibility
As an umbrella organization for local families attending the Greater Grace Church in Baltimore, GGCH enrolls students from K-8th grade.
Resources Available to the GGCH Student
Educational Consultation
After applying and prior to enrollment, the family is entitled to a one hour consultation meeting.
Field Trips
Students are encouraged to participate in field trips with his/her GGCA class, at no expense. Parents are expected to accompany their students on these occasions. We will make every attempt to give parents ample notice of these educational excursions. Note: Younger siblings may not accompany the class on these trips: older siblings may be allowed upon request.
Library
Students may visit the GGCA class libraries to borrow books. Please call the GGCA office to arrange your visit.
Band/Sports
Middle school students (5-8) enrolled in GGCH may participate in the GGCA band program and team sports. Contact the school office for try-out dates and details. Sport and Band fees (see above) will apply. (Refer to the GGCH Fees below)
Chapel Services and Outreach
Homeschooled students and parents are encouraged to attend the weekly GGCA chapel service whenever possible.
Drama/Musicals/Church Celebrations
Whenever possible, we encourage GGCH students to participate in any extra-curricular GGCA activities that occur after regular school hours. Parents are encouraged to communicate and collaborate with the band director/music teacher/play director/youth worker to incorporate your student into these special events.
Special Events
Occasionally GGCA classes plan special events such as ice skating, picnics or amusement park visits. GGCH students and parents are welcome to accompany the class on such occasions, but must pay the same expenses required of GGCA students.
GGCH Requirements
- The parent must obtain a home school notification form and file it with a homeschooling notification form from your county at least 15 days prior to the start of homeschooling. This form is available upon request from the public school your child would attend.
- Mail, fax, or drop off your application form (with a $25.00 check payable to GGCA) and schedule your intake consultation meeting.
- Arrive for your consultation meeting with your course material plan form already completed. We will review the curriculum and materials you plan to use and explain the resources available to you and your student. Parents presenting sound academic plans will be provided with application forms and may enroll their student immediately.
- The home instruction program must provide regular, thorough instruction and include instruction in Bible, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Health, and Physical Education.
- GGCH requires parents and students to keep a daily learning log (documenting time spent) as well as portfolios (containing work completed and assessments) on home instruction for each subject.
- GGCH is required by the State to make an annual visit to your home, or the "site of instruction."
- GGCA requires a mid-year and end-of-year review of both the learning log and the student portfolios.
- Mid-year Review: This meeting is to verify progress and encourage both parent and student. This meeting should take place at the end of the first semester, and we request that student mid-year evaluation forms be completed by the parent prior to this meeting.
- Year-end Evaluation/Portfolio Review: As required by the State of Maryland, an annual review will be completed with the educational consultant and a parent during the last quarter. The portfolio should include dated examples of work done in each subject area, showing progress made. All work will not be reviewed, just samples from throughout the year. Keep copies of tests, final drafts of compositions, summaries of field trips, etc.
